With almost every carpet stain, the single most important factor is how quickly you respond. The longer a stain sits, the deeper it penetrates into the carpet fibres — and the harder it becomes to remove. Keep a small stain kit under your sink: a clean white cloth, white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and a mild dish soap.
Here's how to tackle the most common stains we see in Gold Coast homes.
Act immediately. Blot (never rub) as much wine as possible with a clean white cloth. Then pour a small amount of cold sparkling water onto the stain — the carbonation helps lift the wine from the fibres. Blot again. Apply a mixture of 1 tablespoon dish soap, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 2 cups warm water. Blot from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.
What not to do: Don't use hot water — it sets the tannins in red wine permanently. Don't rub — it spreads the stain and damages fibres.
Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Apply to the stain, blot, and repeat until the stain lifts. For dried coffee stains, rehydrate first with a small amount of cold water before treating.
Counterintuitively, the best approach with mud is to let it dry completely first. Once dry, vacuum up as much as possible. Then treat any remaining stain with a mild dish soap and warm water solution, blotting gently. Trying to clean wet mud just spreads it further into the fibres.
Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately. Apply an enzyme-based cleaner (available at Woolworths or Bunnings) — these are the only products that break down the uric acid crystals that cause the persistent smell. Follow the product instructions, which usually involve letting it sit for 10–15 minutes before blotting.
Avoid: Steam cleaning fresh pet urine — the heat permanently sets the odour. Ammonia-based cleaners — the smell attracts pets to re-mark the same spot.
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda generously over the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes to absorb the grease. Vacuum up the bicarb, then apply a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent or dish soap directly to the stain. Blot gently and repeat as needed.
Always use cold water for blood — hot water cooks the proteins and sets the stain permanently. Blot with cold water and a clean cloth. For stubborn stains, a paste of bicarbonate of soda and cold water left for 30 minutes before blotting can help.
Some stains — particularly old, set stains, large areas, or anything involving bleach or dye — require professional treatment. At CCL, we use professional-grade pre-treatment solutions and hot water extraction equipment that can tackle stains that home methods simply can't reach.
